Making of: 'Herzensbreacher' heart

A little bit back to front, but here are a couple of work-in-progress shots of my heart for the Herzensbreacher show. I found this great clip once on youtube of how to make miniature trees for hobby train sets. Same technique used here. Spray glue, cotton wool, then sprinkle a bunch of crap on it. Gets pretty messy but fun.

Looking back...no.1

The other day I was backing up some of my work files and thought it might be fun to post some of my old first pieces (under the Seymour thing).
This piece 'Sammy's Snarlers' was really the first actual finished piece I did.
I'd been screwing around with these types of characters for years, but I guess this was the first time everything came together.
At the time I'd just finished a design internship in Vienna....which I loved but....but ended rather badly....which meant I had to spend several months in Edinburgh....(which I loved) not being able to do too much.......long story short, I started to draw heaps and I guess this was my summery of Vienna;) and it's still one of my favourite pieces.

Ein Herz für Kinder

I've just finished a new piece for the up coming group show 'Herzensbrecher' which opens at Strychnin Gallery next month.
The show is focused on raising money for the German charity organisation 'Ein Herz für Kinder'.
There's over 50 international artists taking part in this show, each customising a blank bone china heart created by 'The New English'.
I'll post more info regarding the show soon.

Upcoming Show

In June I will be part of a 3 man show alongside Doktor A, and Skeleton Heart. The show will be a carnival/circus show with a touch of steam punk and will consist of various sculptures from the artists.
I will be doing as many small domed sculptures as I can possibly get done. All the characters are sketched up and I have started the sculpting process for the first lot.

A little Book of Monsters

Ok, so I have had a rather lazy blogging start to 2012. My New years resolution (one of them) was to be slightly more active on here. I have a packed year ahead so there will be a heap to post ;)
The year has kicked off with a bunch of freelancing jobs including kids books, show work and tattoo designs. It's been great to have a little break from the sculpting and get back to some illustrating.
For the last 3 years I have worked doing projects with the Scottish composer Stephen Deazley.
Stephen creates these amazing shows incorporating junkyard style orchestral bands alongside mass children’s choirs. His latest show is called 'A little Book of Monsters'. The show is broken down in to seven sections with seven different songs about different monsters. My job was to Design the monsters.
Below are a couple of examples. One is about a Snob Goblin and the other about cannibal monsters who end up eating themselves.
I will post more info on the show later in the year but for now you can get an idea of the music on their website, it's well worth a listen. (http://www.myspace.com/musicatthebrewhouse)

Artief Art fair

I'm just back from a great few days at the Artief art fair in Belgium. The fair was held in Diest, which is not far from Brussels. This was a very unique fair to show at as it was housed at the Hallezaal which is an old fabric warehouse built in 1352. So you can imagine what a buzz it was to show my work in a building that dates 600 years before my own country was even colonised ;)...and in Belgium to make it even better!
It was a weekend of great art, great food and the best beer EVER!
Thanks to our amazing hosts Raf and Miranda who went out of their way to show us a few of the Belgium delicacies ;)
The pictures below of the Hallezaal as well as the Strychnin Gallery booth I was part of.

Organic Mechanics

Artfair 21 and Blooom pics

More pics! Here are a few shots of the Strychnin Booths at this years Artfair 21 and Blooom fair that we have just returned from. This year we had a massive 100m2 and where showing the best of the best from Strychnin Gallery artists. The booths were broken up into artists environments this year which created a really interesting feel when walking through.
I guess I'm a little biased but think it's saying that the quality of the Strychnin Booths really stood out and above the rest;)

'Creature Feature' opening night

Finally I have some time to catch up on a bit of bloggy stuff. Here are some pics of the opening night of the Creature Feature show last month. It was a great opening with a heap of really interested people excited to see this type of artwork/sfx work closeup and in person.

'ArtFair 21' pieces

I've just spent the past week down in Cologne/Germany for this years Art Fair 21 and Blooom fair. This is the same fair in which I created the dolls house for last year.
This year I created 4 new pieces to go along with the others from my recent 'Organic Mechanics' collection.
All pieces are one off original sculptures, handmade from a mix of painted sculps, resins and recycled parts. The sculptures also come with a custom wood and leather base and are encased in plexiglass domes.
For info on availability and pricing you can contact Strychnin Gallery here, or take a look at the art fair presale.

'Creature Feature' show pieces

Hi all, here a two new pieces that I've been working on for the Creature Feature show this Friday. These 2 are actually from a series of 6 new sculpts which will beshowing at this years Koeln Art Fair at the end of the month.
The idea of these pieces was Organic Mechanic, so yeah the outcome was kind of steam punk-esk this time which but was fun to mix it up a bit.
Anyways, watch this space for the other 4 pieces from this series, just doing the finishing touches.
And for all back in NZ, There will be a new shipment of prints to hit Eyeball kicks any day now.

'Creature Feature' show

Several months ago I was asked to be part of a special group show in Berlin called 'Creature Feature', set to open on October 7th.
Being a movie and sci-fi geek from way back I was super excited be asked to be part of a show along side artists such as Jordu Schell, Chet Zar, and a bunch of other huge names within the SFX and movie industry.
As the title of the show suggests this will be a creature show. It will feature the behind the scenes artists that have created some of the most iconic creatures of all time from movies such as Start Wars, Predator, Alien, 300, Hellboy, The Corpse Bride.......the list goes on and on.
So at the end of the day, I am very lucky and honored to be part of this show as I am the only creature designer not involved in the movie industry ;)
Below is a special invite in which Paul Vincett of 'Stitches and Glue' created for the show. His amazing puppets will also be featured at in the show and he will be doing a live puppeteering demonstration in the gallery.
So long story short, this will be an amazing show. I will have 3 new sculptures. Come along and see some incredible creature sculptural work.
THE END

Hello Polly

I want to introduce you all to my new stockist 'Hello Polly'.
At the end of last year, Sarah the manager and curator of 7 years at The Red Door gallery packed up house and family and moved from Edinburgh to Melbourne to start up her new venture and have a well deserved change in the weather.
'Hello Polly' is an eclectic mix of art, design, crafts and everything in between. Sarah has always had a keen eye for picking out interesting and up coming artists and I trust that 'Hello Polly' is going to be a HUGE success. The online store will be be going live any day now, but until then you can take at look at the blog where you can get a little taste of what Hello Polly will have to offer.
