Artief Art fair

I'm just back from a great few days at the Artief art fair in Belgium. The fair was held in Diest, which is not far from Brussels. This was a very unique fair to show at as it was housed at the Hallezaal which is an old fabric warehouse built in 1352. So you can imagine what a buzz it was to show my work in a building that dates 600 years before my own country was even colonised ;)...and in Belgium to make it even better!
It was a weekend of great art, great food and the best beer EVER!
Thanks to our amazing hosts Raf and Miranda who went out of there way to show us a few of the Belgium delicacies ;)

More pics! Here are a few shots of the Strychnin Booths at this years Artfair 21 and Blooom fair that we have just returned from. This year we had a massive 100m2 and where showing the best of the best from Strychnin Gallery artists. The booths were broken up into artists environments this year which created a really interesting feel when walking through.
I guess I'm a little biased but think it's saying that the quality of the Strychnin Booths really stood out and above the rest;)

I've just spent the past week down in Cologne/Germany for this years Art Fair 21 and Blooom fair. This is the same fair in which I created the dolls house for last year.
This year I created 4 new pieces to go along with the others from my recent 'Organic Mechanics' collection.
All pieces are one off original sculptures, handmade from a mix of painted sculps, resins and recycled parts. The sculptures also come with a custom wood and leather base and are encased in plexiglass domes.

'Creature Feature' show pieces

Hi all, here a two new pieces that I've been working on for the Creature Feature show this Friday. These 2 are actually from a series of 6 new sculpts which will beshowing at this years Koeln Art Fair at the end of the month.
The idea of these pieces was Organic Mechanic, so yeah the outcome was kind of steam punk-esk this time which but was fun to mix it up a bit.
Anyways, watch this space for the other 4 pieces from this series, just doing the finishing touches.
And for all back in NZ, There will be a new shipment of prints to hit Eyeball kicks any day now.

'Creature Feature' show

Several months ago I was asked to be part of a special group show in Berlin called 'Creature Feature', set to open on October 7th.
Being a movie and sci-fi geek from way back I was super excited be asked to be part of a show along side artists such as Jordu Schell, Chet Zar, and a bunch of other huge names within the SFX and movie industry.
As the title of the show suggests this will be a creature show. It will feature the behind the scenes artists that have created some of the most iconic creatures of all time from movies such as Start Wars, Predator, Alien, 300, Hellboy, The Corpse Bride.......the list goes on and on.
So at the end of the day, I am very lucky and honored to be part of this show as I am the only creature designer not involved in the movie industry ;)
Below is a special invite in which Paul Vincett of 'Stitches and Glue' created for the show. His amazing puppets will also be featured at in the show and he will be doing a live puppeteering demonstration in the gallery.
So long story short, this will be an amazing show. I will have 3 new sculptures. Come along and see some incredible creature sculptural work.

I have just finished a new print especially for this years Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Each A3 size poster/print is signed and offset printed onto 100% recycled paper 170gsm matt paper.

'Gentle Giants' opening night.

'Manbot' comes to life

Here are some pics of the final 'Manbot' I have made for the up coming robot show 'Gentle Giants'.

He stands about 100cm high, has double jointed moving limbs and waist. Built in lights with a light up electro brain and a light up torso filled with floating body parts.

He's constructed out of a mix of gold and copper sheeting, wood, metals, resins...the list goes on....he's heavy.

'Gentle Giants' Robot Show

Next Friday (the 15th) I have a piece in the group show titled Gentle Giants. It's a special robot show featuring robot artists from around the world. Michael Salter will also be there constructing one of his amazing robot installations out of polystyrene packing materials, Check out a video of his work here.

Cuckoo Clocks on tour.

The Cuckoo Clocks I made for the 'Enchanted Forest' show at Strychnin Gallery last month have now gone down to be part of a show in the museum 'Musei Civici' in Reggio Emilia, Italy. This is a super interesting show with all the artworks exhibited amongst the natural history section and are surrounded by old school taxidermy.

Manbot under construction

Cuckoo Compendium Parts I & II

Here are some pics of couple of pieces I made for the 'Enchanted Forest' group show currently on at Strychnin Gallery Berlin. The show is a charity show in association with WWF and is celebrating the 'International Year of the Forest'. There are some amazing artists involved in this show including Greg Bagshaw, Caitlin Hackett, Lindsey Carr, Luke Chueh, Travis Lampe and Mimi .S, just to name a few.

I've always loved cuckoos and thought this show would be the perfect opportunity to have a go at making my own version of one.

The outer/casing of the cuckoos are constructed from wood and sculpted polymer clays and then airbrushed. Instead of the having functioning clocks I have installed a sculpture in each cuckoo. They also have battery powered LEDs inside which light up the diorama.

These were a heap of fun to make and I have a lot of ideas for even more elaborate designs.

The opening was a huge success with a lot of support for the cause and I was happy to see one of the cuckoos go to a new home.

The show will run for the next four weeks so if your in the neighbourhood it's well worth popping in for a look. Buying some great artwork and supporting a very good cause ;)

1952 Seymour Spyder

I was approached a while back by a guy in New Zealand who wanted me to customise a collectors diecast car as a commission. When I first saw the size of the car I was slightly worried about how I could still give it detailing as a sculpture. Once I got that sorted I was straight into it and it was a heap of fun.

The car measures only 10 cms in length and as you can see it fits on the palm of your hand. The character and added car parts are made from polymer clay and are hand painted and varnished. He also has tattoo decals which are to scale and comes with a custom display case I made as the the original one didn't fit after modifications were added ;)

The modal of the original car is a 1952 300L Mercedes Spyder, hence the '1952 Seymour Spyder', kind of fitting...

'Retired Wrestlers' Print set

I have been working away on this new print set title 'Retired Wrestlers'. I was a huge WWF fan when I was a kid and thought it would be fun to do some simple character studies of some fictional washed up wrestlers.

The prints are 14.5 x 19.5 including a 5mm white boarder and are printed onto 300gsm archival 100% Recycled paper. The recycled paper soaks up way more ink than synthetic mixed papers resulting in really rich tones/colours and a soft matt finish. Ohhhhhhh.

I decided to keep this set as an open edition making them more affordable and in a different price range from my limited edition Giclees. The prints are still signed both front and back.

You can purchase the prints separately though my etsy store as well as though my galleries in a special packaged set like you can see in the pics below.

New Piece for the Mad Potters

Hi all, just a few pics of my new piece I created for 'The Mad Potters Tea Party' show at Strychnin Gallery in Berlin. This piece is was created with various clays and casts as well as some old broken toys that I gave a new life to. This one was snapped up pretty quick but there are more on the way with a solo show of sculptures later in the year as well as a collection for the NY Comic con.
The Mad Potter show was a blast with hundreds of people attending and the gallery space looked amazing set up in true Alice in Wonderland style.

The Mad Potters Tea Party

I'm currently working on a new sculptural piece for the up coming February show at Strcyhnin Gallery. The Show is titled 'The Mad Potters Tea Party ' and is an Alice inWonderland inspired collaborative group show with the Uk ceramic innovators 'The New English'.
The show will consist of customised bone China from a bunch of really amazing artists including Ray Caesar, Chris Mars, Lola, Krk Ryden and Matt Haber.
We have all be asked to design imagery for a range of TNE products such as cups and saucers, plate, platters... There are even vases and urns to choose from. Each piece willbe a limitededition of only 10 and will come signed and packaged with a certificate of authenticity.
The UK model makers and special effects team 'Skeleton Heart' will also be making Mad Potters and other characters who will be sitting around a giant dinning table covered by ceramics in the middle of the gallery space.
So if you're in Berlin on Feb 4th come along to the gallery and take it look. This will be a crazy show and a good chance to get some nice custom pieces at a pretty good price.

This is an example of one of the plates that I have already produced with The New English and gives you an idea of what this show will involve.

Seymours Troll House.

A few months back I posted some pics of a house I have been making for the Köln Artfair 21. After a blurry 3 months I am finally done and have just come back from Köln exhausted but really happy with how it all turned out.
Artfair 21 is one of the biggest art fairs in Europe so it was an honor to be asked to show my work there. The reception was great and I made some really good hookups and contacts.
So below are some pics of the house. It stands about 150cm and is made from a mix of woods, polymers clays, plastics, resins and paint.
If you are in Berlin in February you will get the chance to see it on display in a show at the Strychnin Gallery. If you have any enquiries feel free to get in touch.

If you haven't seen it in stores already, there is great magazine/art book available from the UK called Ammo Magazine. Ammos Focus is finding and exposing illustrators worldwide. They are also totally independent which means they aren't restricted by big publishing companies, but it also means they work very hard each month to produce the issue on limited funding.
This month I was lucky enough to be featured in issue 4 with an interview and lots of samples of my work. If you get in early you can score a one of the limited edition mags with a hand made cover full of stickers and other bits. If you are into art book and love illustration I highly recommend you check this magazine out! Oh yeah it's only £5

Seymour Dolls house

Hi all.

A few weeks back I said I would post some pics of the house I am building for the Cologne Artfair 21 in October. It's been a mammoth project so far and has taken far longer than I thought it would...as usual. I have designed and constructed each part individually and put it all together like a big puzzle. All the detailing is hand cut and carved and is constructed from mostly wood and plastics as well as thick card for the tiling etc. So far it stands about 140cm tall. The outside still needs its lights and a paint job and then I can start the inside which will be 9 different rooms. Not your classic dolls house rooms!

New Print!

Earlier in the year I created an ink drawing for the Strychnin Gallery titled '7 Year Glitch'. It was for a group show called '7 year itch' which was celebrating Strychnins 7th birthday.
I really liked this piece and was always interested to see what it would be like in colour. So I have released it as a limited edition Giclee print. It is a small edition of only 30 and is printed onto Hahnemühle 290gsm archival Bamboo paper. The Bamboo paper is a very smooth matt stock with a nice cream tone to it.
The size of the print is 21 x 35 cm and comes with the hand debossed Seymour stamp and a certificate of authenticity. It is available now through the Red Door Galley and Eyeball Kicks Gallery.

'Halfway Home' group show

The Red Door Gallery has teamed up with the Scottish model making duo 'Finch and Fourarce' to present a new group show titled 'Halfway home'. The artists were all sent one of the 'Finch and Fourarce' tenement kit-sets to construct and customise. This was a really fun project and as you can see I got slightly carried away with my one. The tenements measure around 18 cm high and my one has a built in light and acts as a little lamp;)
The show begins on Friday at The Red Door Gallery and will run through the month with all the tenaments at a super cheap price ranging from £35-£75.

The Adventures of an Antiquitarian

This is a selection of work from my latest solo show titled 'The Adventures of an Antiquitarian. The show documents the voyage and findings of a fictional character named Arthur Bazaljet and his companion Otto Heinz Vanderpaw.

Original Ink Drawings
The show includes 28 1/1 small (13x18cm) framed ink drawings. I wanted the pictures to be like it was Arthur Bazaljet drawing what he found on his adventures, nearly like a visual diary/sketch book. So the pictures are a mix of strange creatures, vehicles, animals, etc. The drawings are a lot more detailed than I usually do them and they kind of look like etchings when you see them in real. Again, contact the Red Door Gallery if you are interested.

Next month (June 17th) I will be having a small solo show at the 'Red Door Gallery' in Edinburgh. The show will be titled 'Adventures of an Antiquitarian' and will be an extension of the print portfolios I did earlier in the year. The show will be made up of small original framed ink drawings as well as a few small sculptures. This is great chance for collectors of my work to get there hands on an original 1/1 piece. There will also be a special A2 poster made just for the show as well as few other interesting bits and pieces for under £10.

'7 Year Itch' Strychnin show

Last friday was the opening of the 7 year itch show celebrating Strychnin Galleries 7 birthday with a huge show of over 60 international artists....myself included. It was a great show with heaps of cool work. You can check out some pics of the evening here.

My piece is titled '7 Year Glitch' and is a 1/1 detailed ink drawing onto fine art paper. This was also the first time I made my own frame which was a satisfying experience.

The Adventures of an Antiquitarian: Volume 1

Well happy New year everyone! Hope you had a great Christmas and New Year and the beginning of 2010 is treating you all well.

I'm starting the year off with this new mini collection of prints. There are 4 prints and each is of an edition of only 10. Number 1-5 come as a set in a special handmade portfolio and number 6-10 can be purchased individually.

The prints are created with a special ink transfer technique onto mould made Hahnemuhle Bamboo paper and then hand rendered with ink pens, stamped and embossed.

'Seat with a view'

'Seat with a view' is a new sculpture I have just finished for Strychnin Gallery in Berlin. It started a few months ago when I found an old clock at a market which was basically dead apart from it's shell and thought it would be nice to cut the front out and use it like a stage. At the same market I witnessed an old homeless guy trying entice a young girl by waving his half eaten corn cob at her. So a mix of that and too much Jethro Tulls 'Aqualung' album, this is what came out. I gutted the clock, refinished it and installed a small light with a switch. Then sculpted the characters and the trees from a mix of clays and hand painted them. The back ground is of children dancing around with balloons.

Razor blade candy canes

The Red door Gallery in Edinburgh has a bit of a reputation for having an amazing Christmas display each year. They call on independent artists to create hand made decorations which sell from £1-£25 with a portion of that going to a charity.

Last year I made the Christmas wish list books (see way below on the blog), this year it's Razor blade candy canes....or parcel openers if customs asks. They are made from polymer clay with inserted super sharp blades, hand painted and varnished with a tie up fasten.

I just wanted to take the chance to give the ups to a gallery that stocks my work back in New Zealand.

Eyeball kicks opened in 2005 by a Wellington couple, Calvin and Monique. The gallery is a real mix from lowbrow to Fine art, Tiki art, Posters, Ltd Edition Prints, t-shirts, etc. Christmas Gifts galore!!!

They have also started doing custom framing jobs and are doing an amazing job of framing up my prints in interesting ways.

Award winning composer and band leader Stephen Deazley has teamed up with BBC Radio 4’s Saturday Live poet Matt Harvey to create a quirky and cantankerous collection of songs for young children to sing and children of all ages to enjoy!

Harvey’s humourous and heart-breaking lyrics delight in the childishness of children and regales with tales of the absurdity of grown-ups. Fourteen piece band Music at the Brewhouse are joined by a massed choir of 300 young singers from Edinburgh’s Voice Academy and Glasgow’s Voice Factory for a very special world premiere.

Hi all.

Well the Edinburgh Fringe Festival kicks off next week. It's now the biggest arts festival in the world with gigs, shows and every type of art event you can imagine running 24/7 for the whole month. To Celebrate I have made these three festival inspired sculptures that will be available at The Red Door Gallery who are conveniently located in the heart of Edinburgh's old town (42 Victoria Street).

The pieces are 1 of 1 hand sculpted with polymer clay, then painted and gloss lacquered, mounted in antique domes. They range in size with the tallest being approximately 18cm.

These are pretty fun to make so I imagine this is just the beginning.

Hello all, I thought it was about time for a midsummer update from hot Berlin. To start with the 'Midsummer Night’s Madness' group show at Strychnin Gallery went really well. There was so much incredible work on display for the show. The show had a favorable review in national German newspaper Die Welt, and I was also lucky enough to meet up with Frank from the super cool I heart Berlin website to chat about the things I've been creating since living in Berlin. Here is the link if you would like to read the article, iheartberlin review also I highly recommend having a look in at the site anyway if you are interested in what's happening around the city, as its updated daily and always an interesting read. Plans for the next few months is a collection of small sculpture pieces to work with vintage glass domes that I have been relentlessly hunting and gathering from markets and vintage stores around the city. My next print piece will be a 1/1 with what I am hoping will be intricate, detailed drawings that are a continuation of some of the themes I explored in 'Under the Looking Glass'. Also on the list is to make a bit of time to see the sun from somewhere other than behind my studio window. Anyway, thanks for all your support and coming past so regularly to see what's new, all the best for your long summer days (and nights!).

Over the past few months I have been working on these new pieces for the 'Midsummers Night Madness show which is on at Strychnin Gallery in Berlin on the 12th June. 'Custom Chess set'
Since being in Berlin I have had the time a to try out some bigger projects. I had always loved the look of Chess sets even though I don't play.
I started off with sculpting the characters out of polymer clay and then making silicone molds from them. I then cast them out of a strong plaster/silicone mix to make the 36 pieces. 1x King, 1x Queen, 2x Bishops, 2x Knights, 2 x Rooks and 8 x different pawns each side. After touching them up and painting them I then started to construct the board. The board is made to fold in half into a case and has custome fit felt covered draws to hold the pieces. The actual board playing size is 38x38cm with a 6cm boarder. This is a one off so get in fast!

1/1 Print: Ink and digital mixed Media. Archival Giclee Print on to William Tuner 310gsm art paper. Hand embossed and framed.
This is a piece I completed earlier in the year and had been waiting for the right time to release it. The Strychin show being a perfect op. I decided not to make it edition so this is the first of my 1/1 prints.

Hi all, this is sneak peak of what I am working on at the moment. These are the some of the characters I have been modelling for a chess set I am making for the 'Mid Summers night Madness' show at the Strychnin gallery in Berlin in June.
I have made these out of a mix of Polymer clays and plan to cast them out of glass resin for the final set.

Hi all.

I thought I'd post a sneak peak (in galleries within the next week) of the new prints that I've been working on over the last month or so, a project of moments in time that go back as far as 20 years, saved up especially for this series. The Snapshot series is a set of 3 prints, each one based on a mental snapshot in time that I have experienced personally or that visually created a long lasting effect.

These are prints designed to work together thematically and tonally, although they will also go on sale separately. They are 19.5cm x 28cm and printed onto Hahnemuhle archival fine art paper with an edition size of 100 of each. The Edition number is higher than some of my previous pieces in order to make them affordable for all to purchase as a threesome, as that is how they were designed to be viewed. Each print is presented mounted on black card protected in a plastic sleeve, signed and numbered. For enquiries regarding purchasing and stockists go here.

'Why do birds suddenly appear?' Sculpted Model

I have been wanting to try turning my flat graphics into sculpture for some time now. I started off with a few easy characters to see what the process involved as I hadn't even touched clay since I was at school. They turned out better than I thought so I moved onto small sets.
This one stands about 28cm high and is made from a mixture of modelling clays and then hand painted and cased in an old clock dome. I really enjoyed the process involved in this type of modelling and I plan on exploring this medium way more and see what I can do.

Hello. Hope you all had fantastic Christmas and New Year celebrations. I had a great time, thanks to family, friends and festive cheer. I even got to fit in a bit of a break, which is just as well cause it's all go again now that its January. These are some pics of the christmas decorations I made for The Red Door galleries decoration exhibition.

I had found 10 little gold boxes in Paris a year ago and had put them aside thinking they would be great for a project.

I wanted to design a decoration that would go on the tree every year and would be passed through the family. So the result was a miniature wish list book incased in a customised gold box. The books are totally hand made with hard covers and are perfect bound with 30 pages.

There are only 6 of these for sale and will be at The Red Door gallery for the next month.

This is a piece I have been working on for the last month. I'm pretty happy with the outcome. I think it's the first time my female characters actually look like ladies and not bricks.

Anyway it's is a commissioned piece that will be used as a tour poster for one of Stephan Deazley's music productions coming up next year. I'll post the actual poster when it's all finished.

'Under the looking glass' solo show

This is one of my latest prints from the 'Under the looking Glass' show. 'No place like home' is a high quality Giclee print, printed on 310gsm archival German Etching art paper and measures 56 x 72 cm. It is from an edition of 10. You can have a closer look here.

Seymour's Crystal Balls. Each crystal ball comes with 5 interchangeable images from the 'Under the looking Glass' collection and are packaged in a silk lined miniature hat box. I only made 8 of these and think there is still a couple left at The Red Door Gallery in Edinburgh.

These are hand-made plush toys created by 'Love Fran'. Each toy is limited to 5 per character. They are made from baby cord and stand 20cm in height. The characters include Sherman Swindler, Ida Glass, Bondage Boy and Monkey.
